Marriage–Christ and the Church

“Christian” Relationships

Hi Family, and Friends,

The following passage is well know as a key biblical teaching on Christian Marriage, and has probably been written about as much or more than any other passages in scripture. So why am I attempting to do a meditation on this passage that is probably so familiar to you?  Well first it is because we are starting to dig into this whole section on Sunday mornings with Pastor Bill; second many Christian couples are not conforming to and living out the spirit and letter of this instruction; finally because in order to comprehend the vehement attack on marriage in our culture today, we must  understand the powerful and vital spiritual connection between a Christian man and woman in marriage and their relationship  with Christ.

Ephesians 5:22 – 33

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.  For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word,  that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”  This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

Some Key issues in the marriage relationship of Christians are found in this passage:

  • The necessity for submission of the Church to the headship our Lord and Savior Jesus who is the foundation of our lives.
  • The necessity of the submission of our lives to one another for God’s purposes .
  • The importance of understanding and learning to demonstrate the self sacrificial Love of Christ.
  • Learning how the unity and bond of Christ with His church is mysteriously being reflected in the unity and bond of the man being joined to his wife in their relationship.

During these next few weeks I am hoping that we can all reflect on God’s purposes in our lives. Jesus died to restore our relationship with our Creator God and to restore our relationships with one another and certainly the marriage relationship is the most intimate we have in this life. All of our relationships are reflective of and dramatically determined by our relationship with our Savior and Lord, Jesus.

Please take time to reflect on your relationship with Jesus and with your spouse, and others. What is the condition of each and do you see the vital connection between the two?  Have you come to realize that the strife, the problems, the disagreements and disunity in your marriage and also in other relationships is a reflection of your relationship with Jesus?  Do you see that without the husbands and wife’s submission to the Lord Jesus, they will have little bases for loving and respecting one another.

John 13:35  “ By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

1Cr 13:4  Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.

May the Love of Christ fill our hearts, strengthen our marriages, sustain and keep us till He comes!           Blessings and Love  Vince
