Jesus teaches about His relationship with His disciples then and now:
Gospel of John Chapter 15:
1 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.
5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 8 By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.
In this passage the apostle John shares Jesus teaching in which He uses the metaphor of the grape vine and the branches to demonstrate the vital relationship that we as believers have with Him. There is much to learn from this illustration and Jesus points out what the main issues are with this powerful example.
Vs 1 God sent His son and planted Him in the world to be the source of life for a dying world. And non less that God the Father who is in control of Jesus life on earth and ours.
Vs 2 The branches that who seem to be followers/ believers but who are not really abiding (living ) in Jesus because they are not showing the fruit of godly / obedient living. It does not seem here to be a concern for the amount of fruit or the quality of fruit but the absence of fruit. God prunes and nurtures those who are abiding and He causes us to produce “more fruit” Ephesians 2: 10
Vs 3 Those who abide in Jesus through faith in His gospel, have been sanctified through His word and stand “cleansed” in the righteousness of Christ Jesus. John 17: 19
Vs 4 – 5 Jesus is the very source of all life and apart from Him we have no life. Just as the branch apart from the vine dies so we apart from Jesus will also die and our lives will produce no “good” godly fruit to eternal life.
Vs 6 The consequences of not believing and following Jesus, of not abiding in Him are that we will wither and die and will be cast out as a fruitless and dead branch to be burned up.
VS 7 – 8 If we abide (believe, and follow) in Jesus and we allow His words to “live” abide in us (we are committed to , learning and obeying His commands) we can confidently ask Him for what we desire and it will be done because it will be in accord with His purpose and plans. Thus our heavenly Father is glorified and we show ourselves to be true disciples.
